Some of these programs have grown into large multiservice agencies that attempt to provide for most if not all of the needs of individuals diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. When a treatment is seen as superior for a particular condition, it is often prescribed immediately without offering the patient any alternatives, since in many cases the doctor’s view is that there are no realistic alternatives.
